Ashikita community hall
With expectation from the community, we challenged to propose a new timber construction system using local timbers. The large domed roof is supported by structural system of bonded plywood of Japanese cedar, and structural members are interwoven like a bamboo basket. This is the first construction of this kind of timber-weaving structural system in Japan. The main hall contains three small spaces, and it is enveloped in unique form, which outline is concaved in some places. This form helps keeping the dome from flattening out, and also good for acoustic effects. We wanted to propose something different from conventional plan of gymnasium.
